Atmospheric CO₂ capture
Direct Air Capture
To make a sustainable contribution to climate protection, we use our decades of expertise in exhaust gas technology and apply this to the development of our advanced technology for CO₂ extraction directly from the ambient air.

TECHNOLOGIES FOR NEGATIVE EMISSIONS
Negative emissions are a crucial building block in the fight against climate change and for achieving climate neutrality.
While reducing emissions is essential, it alone will not be enough to achieve global climate targets. In addition to natural CO₂ sinks such as forests, moors and oceans, which bind carbon dioxide through biological and chemical processes, technological solutions such as carbon capture and removal are also playing an increasingly central role. They are particularly crucial in offsetting historical emissions – the cumulative greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere caused by human activities since the beginning of the industrial revolution.

In addition, CO₂ is increasingly gaining recognition as a valuable raw material with a wide range of potential applications.
Its use in a closed, climate-neutral cycle - for example in the chemical industry or the energy sector, such as in the production of synthetic fuels – opens up innovative prospects for a sustainable economy and at the same time reduces dependence on fossil resources.
In this way, negative emissions create double added value: they remove excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and form the basis for a climate-neutral CO₂ cycle.
KEY TECHNOLOGY DIRECT AIR CAPTURE
Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a key technology for the targeted capture of CO₂ directly from the atmosphere.
Using chemical and physical processes, carbon dioxide is effectively removed from the ambient air and can either be safely stored (Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS) or further utilized as a raw material (Carbon Capture and Utilization, CCU).
The basic functioning of direct air capture technologies can be described as follows:

In a first step, fans draw the ambient air containing carbon dioxide into the Direct Air Capture module.
The air flows through filters that are specially designed to adsorb CO₂ molecules.
The sorption material binds the CO₂ chemically or physically and effectively separates it from other components of the air such as oxygen and nitrogen.
The CO₂ is released from the sorption material again by heating and can be stored in concentrated form (CCS) or processed for further use (CCU) in the final step.
Purem by Eberspächer is developing a highly efficient DAC module whose scalability will create the basis for making climate protection not only more efficient but also economically viable.
ADVANTAGES OF OUR MODULAR CONCEPT
Purem by Eberspächer technology is based on the idea of combining short cycle times with robust, commercially available materials.
Solid sorbents enable modular and scalable separation modules that can be manufactured in large quantities.
The energy supply comes from 100 percent renewable electricity. The process itself can be adapted to weather conditions and current energy costs and uses no water.
In addition to CO₂ storage, a high CO₂ purity also enables its direct utilization (CCU).
